When Lucien returned to the apartment, a bag of groceries in one arm and a bottle of Veuve Cliquot in the other, he was amused to see the feline pose his wife, Kitty, struck. She napped curled inside her nudity, tucked into the papasan, a beady half-glass of iced tea abandoned to the end table, a swell of shady silence suspended in the hirsute crotch of late afternoon, a long pause of a person. What a time, he thought, for the air conditioner to be on the fritz.
