Project Description

Part of a series on independent bookstores in the Twin Cities for the blog of now defunct tech startup RedCurrent, this article covers nonprofit bookstore and community hub Boneshaker Books in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Through interviews, I unfold the story of how bike delivery and volunteer power kept this alternative space afloat.

Take profit motive and paid employees out of the equation, and you get Boneshaker Books
— a collectively-run independent bookstore/event space/meeting spot and hotspot amongst
MSP’s literary circles. In the children’s section, I sit around a munchkin-sized table with one
of the founders, Amanda Luker, the events committee head, Aaron King, and new collective
member Rachael Goins. Boneshaker Books, to my delight and hopefully yours, truly expands on the meaning of “independent” in “independent bookstore.”
