One of a number of book reviews written for Asian American Press, my review of After Dark, a novel by Haruki Murakami, was subsequently translated into Vietnamese and placed in a publication in Vietnam.

Japanese writer Haruki Murakami’s work continues to hold its global readership spellbound. His books have been translated into over 30 languages. They are taught in universities all across the United States. Millions of Japanese youth devour his world-class literature like so
much manga. Thus it is an event when a new Murakami novel is published. But to some it’s a bad omen. Established Japanese literary critics will tell you that Murakami’s work is un-Japanese. This rebel is diluting Japanese literature with Western form and content.
